How to Become Cloud Architect?

Cloud computing is exponentially growing and taking over the tech market. It has opened a wide spectrum of new opportunities over the last decade. More and more organizations are migrating to the cloud and there are many others who plan to do so. It is really inspiring for cloud professionals, as their demand in the market is directly proportional to the growth of cloud computing. This rise in the demand for cloud professionals has brought a huge change in the picture of the job market.

Cloud Architect

Becoming a Cloud Architect is a popular method to remain ahead of the curve and capitalize on current opportunities. Cloud Architects will be in high demand once cloud computing is more extensively utilized.  A Cloud Architect is in charge of configuring all of the components needed for successful cloud deployment, as well as building cloud networks by connecting remote servers, setting up both front-end and back-end platforms, and developing a working cloud-based delivery system. A Cloud Architect also builds cloud storage and computing systems from the ground up, guaranteeing system security and compliance.

Skills required to become a Cloud Architect

Architects who do not tend to learn new things or do not believe in updating their skills will never grow. In the famous HBO series “Game of Thrones”, Tyrion Lannister says ‘I drink and I know things’, the same way you have to learn to know things. You must understand that the ability to learn is the most valuable attribute.

Along with this, you must have an in-depth knowledge of cloud computing background. You also need to have a good understanding of:

1. Command Over Programming Languages:
A basic grasp of any programming or scripting language will undoubtedly help a lot in building a career as a cloud architect. Understanding programming or scripting languages like python, JSON, NodeJS, etc can really help.

2. Expertise in Data Storage and Security:
Data Storage in the cloud is the most important aspect of cloud services, it is needless to explain how crucial it is. One must have a good knowledge of data storage.

Because cloud security is so critical, a Cloud Architect must have a high-level grasp of core security principles. As a result, a basic understanding of security principles such as firewalls is required.

3. Knowledge of Any One Operating System:
You must have an in-depth knowledge of at least one operating system. Linux is highly preferred as it is mostly used in organizations and it is very stable.

4. Understanding of Networking Concepts:
If you want to pursue a career as a cloud architect, it is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the networking concepts such as TCP/IP, IP addresses, HTTP, and DNS, etc.

5. Experience of Database:
Having a fair knowledge of some kind of DBMS systems like SQL, MySQL, etc. will be an add-on because many organizations are now deploying or migrating their databases in the cloud.

6. Proficiency in Cloud Platforms:
Because the title of the position is Cloud Architect, I believe it goes without saying that expertise in the cloud is required. This is a must-have skill that is non-negotiable. Without knowledge and proficiency in the cloud area, there is no such thing as a Cloud Architect. Because Cloud Architect is a senior-level position, you must have more than a basic understanding of the subject. You must have a thorough understanding of the cloud.

Certification Path to Become a Cloud Architect

1. Basic cloud certification: In order to become a Cloud Architect, the first and foremost thing is to have a basic understanding of the cloud. You must have a knowledge of the core concepts of the cloud. AWS offers certification as ‘AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner’ that provides the foundational knowledge of Cloud computing. Azure offers the same certification as ‘AZ-900: Microsoft Azure Fundamentals.’

2. Cloud Architect certification: Once you have the basic knowledge of the cloud, you can deep dive into the specialized certifications for different profiles.

If you want to become an ‘AWS Certified Solutions Architect’, you first need to complete the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification and then the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional certification.

Azure follows a similar pattern for the ‘Azure Solutions Architect Expert’ profile. You need to complete two certifications AZ-303: Microsoft Azure Architect Technologies certification and AZ-304: Microsoft Azure Architect Design certification.

3. Build a Project: If you want to excel in your career as a Cloud Architect, this step is mandatory. Building a project will provide you exposure to the theoretical knowledge you possess. It will give you a chance to get familiar with the distinctive challenges one may face in a project. This can be a great opportunity to learn new things.

The Career of a Cloud Architect

Once you have the certification of Cloud Architect and strong cloud computing expertise, there are quite a few employment possibilities in the market. The following are are some of the job profiles for these professionals:

  • Azure Cloud Architect
  • AWS Specialist
  • AWS Cloud Solutions Architect
  • Data Architect
  • Security Architect
  • Senior IT Architect
  • Service Cloud Architect
